5 Global Causes

Every journey begins with a single step. One act of service, one encouraging word, one gift of generosity is often all it takes to bring hope where it’s needed most.

Over the last 100 years, the kindness of Lions and Leos has multiplied across borders, oceans, and continents. With over 1.4 million members, we now have an opportunity to truly change our world.

That’s why we’re uniting our global service around five areas of need. These Global Causes present significant challenges to humanity, and we believe it’s our turn to meet them.

Diabetes

Lions with the support of Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), are working to reduce the prevalence of diabetes and improve the lives of those living with diabetes.

An estimated 463 million adults across the world are living with diabetes, and its prevalence is increasing rapidly. By 2045, the number is expected to reach 700 million. Diabetes is a global epidemic that touches every corner of the globe.

Lions Clubs International and LCIF are dedicated to empowering Lions and Leos around the world to fight diabetes by serving their communities one by one.

Vision

Ever since Helen Keller inspired us to champion the cause in 1925, we’ve served and advocated for the blind and visually impaired. Nearly a century later, this long-standing mission continues unhindered.

  • 253 million people are blind or have moderate to severe distance vision impairment (MSVI)
  • 1.1 billion have near-vision impairment simply because they don’t have a pair of glasses
  • >75% of all blindness and MSVI is avoidable
  • 89% of people with visual impairment live in developing countries

We Have a Plan

We have a long history of serving the blind and visually impaired, and remain committed to continuing this mission into our next century of service.

Our Strategic Objective

Prevent avoidable blindness and improve quality of life for people who are blind and visually impaired.

Hunger

We serve to improve human flourishing. We see how the global hunger and nutrition crisis bears upon our local communities, and believe true community improvement depends on the thriving of its members.

  • 815 million people affected by hunger in 2016: 11% of the global population
  • 155 million children under age five are stunted due to chronic malnutrition
  • 1/3 of annual food production is lost or wasted throughout the supply chain
  • 33% of women of reproductive age suffer from anaemia

We Have a Plan

Lions and Leos serve to improve human flourishing, and we see how the global hunger and nutrition crisis bears upon our local communities. We believe community improvement depends on the thriving of its members.

Our Strategic Objective

Ensure all community members have access to nutritious foods.

Environment

The earth sustains human life. We’ve seen how our stewardship of natural resources can improve quality of life and increase engagement in our local communities. Our environment is more than a background: it’s our home. And we’re committed to caring for it.

  • >3 trillion trees in the world
  • 30% of the world’s land area is covered by forest
  • >15 billion trees are cut down every year
  • 46% Estimated global decrease in tree count since the start of human civilization

We Have a Plan

Lions and Leos serve to strengthen the relationship between the community and its environment. We’ve seen how our stewardship of natural resources can improve quality of life and increase engagement in our local communities.

Our Strategic Objective

Sustainably protect and restore our environment to improve the well-being of all communities.

Childhood Cancer

Lions and Leos, with the support of Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), provide support for the needs of children and families affected by childhood cancer through impactful service activities.

Globally, children cancer looks like this:

  • 400,000 children diagnosed
  • 9 in 10 diagnosed children live in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs)
  • <30% of children with cancer in LMICs survive, compared than ≥80% in high-income countries
